Book Review: Every Soul a Star

Every Soul a Star is written by Wendy Mass. It is told in the perspective of three kids, Ally, a girl who lives in a campsite whose family has been waiting for the solar eclipse for years, Bree, a very popular girl who has always wanted to be a model but her parents are scientists, and Jack, an amazing artist who is a C student. Mass wrote in the characters’ perspectives as the story goes on by using the first person.

EverySoulA-cvr-thumbThe story takes place in Moon Shadow Campground as Ally and her family are preparing for the solar eclipse by welcoming guests and getting the campsite ready, but her parents seem a bit on edge. Bree’s parents tell her that they are moving to a campsite and she doesn’t want to go. Jack gets a call from his science teacher asking him to go camping to see the solar eclipse instead of going to summer school. They all meet at the campground and become friends but there is a lot of confusion. Are Ally and Bree switching places and will Jack be able to make friends?

Every Soul a Star also teaches readers about the eclipse. I listened to this book while we were driving to Oregon to see the total eclipse. I learned about the diamond ring, Bailey’s Beads and the pink flares you can see during totality with binoculars. It was exciting to see all of those things the day after reading about them! I also learned about eclipse chasers.

I would recommend Every Soul a Star to anyone going to see an eclipse or if you just want a nice book to read.
