QuantumCamp Math & Science

UPDATE – January 9, 2018

I’ve just started a new trimester. My new math class is Algorithms. Some of the topics I  will be studying are flow charts, Euclid’s Algorithm, functions and variables and flow structures.  My new science class is Neuroscience. We will be studying each sense and how the brain interprets the sensory inputs and responds.

UPDATE — November 15, 2017

We just finished our first trimester! The classes ended with presentations and a symposium. We all researched topics and made displays. For Geochemistry, I researched mica, the coolest mineral ever! You can see through it! I studied Heron of Alexandria for math since he was the first mathematician to come up with imaginary numbers even though he didn’t understand them. If you want to learn more about mica or Heron of Alexandria, here are my reports!

September 2017

Once a week I have started going to QuantumCamp. I am in a 5/6th grade class and we study science and math. This fall for science I am taking Geochemistry and for math I am taking Complex Numbers.

In Geochemistry we started doing a crystal project where we are trying over the next few weeks to grow crystals in little jars. We learned about solubility and put alum, chrome alum, and copper sulfate and mixed them in water to make a solution and hope that they grow! I am doing a research project on mica later in the session.

In Complex Numbers we made a number line from -30 to 30 and then played a game where we had to using our number line, start at any number, pick a card out of a bag that would say, “face negative and move backwards” or “face positive and move forwards,” etc. Then we would have to roll 2 dice and multiply them. Then we would have to move that number in the direction on the card and write out the equation!
